The top image illustrates the basement lobby to the dining room and patio before Simon Spencer was instructed to design the “press” or large cupboard.  This he did, matching the dado rail and cornice and picking up the panels at the stiles so that he could design them to balance on the return.  In his design he copied the bolection moulding, which follows the panels, so that when it was painted it looked very much as the original pine panelling looked.
